Emcee - On 15th February 2025, Daikai Engineering Pte Ltd hosted a grand Chinese New Year Celebration at the elegant Equarius Ballroom, Equarius Hotel Resorts World Sentosa. With Emcee Ivan leading the evening, the event brought together 150 to 200 guests, including employees and their families, for an evening of tradition, camaraderie, and festivities.
The celebration began with a unique and interactive Mochi Making event, a longstanding tradition at every Daikai Engineering event. For this event, guests enjoyed three traditional varieties: Kinako Mochi (mochi dusted in a sweet and nutty powder made with soybean and sugar), Norimaki Mochi (mochi seasoned with a sweet and savory soy glaze and wrapped in a piece of seaweed), and Red Bean Mochi/Daifuku (round mochi filled with sweet red bean paste). This hands-on experience brought a deeper cultural appreciation and added a meaningful touch to the celebration.
As guests arrived and registered, they were treated to an array of fun activities outside the ballroom, including a photobooth and carnival games, adding to the joyful spirit of the occasion.
The formal proceedings commenced as Emcee Ivan welcomed everyone, leading into heartfelt speeches by Mr. Mikio Kaneda, Managing Director of Daikai Engineering, and Mr. Masayuki Nosohara, Managing Director of Daihatsu Diesel Asia Pacific. Their words of appreciation and encouragement resonated with the audience, reinforcing the company’s vision for the year ahead.
A significant highlight of the evening was the traditional Lo Hei ceremony, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Guests enthusiastically participated, tossing auspicious ingredients like sashimi, sweetened lime, five-spice powder, peanut and sesame seeds, yuzu sauce, and crackers while joyfully exclaiming well-wishes for the new year.
Following the Lo Hei, a delightful dinner commenced, offering guests a delectable spread of festive dishes. The night’s entertainment continued with a captivating Kids Interactive Magic Show, bringing smiles and wonder to the young ones. As the excitement built up, guests enthusiastically participated in stage games such as the Human Treasure Hunt and Sing-it-off, where winners walked away with exciting prizes including coasters, tea bags, soccer balls, a Chanel glass ball, a Chanel brooch, and bottles of alcohol.
The highlight of the evening was the highly anticipated lucky draw, featuring 30 mystery prizes. Mr. Masayuki Nosohara took the honor of drawing and presenting the 11th to 30th prizes, which included soccer balls, a scarf, a wallet, a thermoflask, a snowglobe, a carrier bag, a plate, and NTUC vouchers sponsored by Daihatsu Diesel Asia Pacific. Watch as Daikai Engineering staffs worked together to smoothen the mochigome.
Mochi making is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and is particularly popular during the New Year’s holiday when families come together. This is important, as the traditional method of making mochi takes time and a lot of helping hands. The process begins the night before when mochigome, glutinous (sticky) rice, is cleaned and left to soak in water. The next morning, the rice is steamed and then placed in a large stone or wooden mortar (usu). Using a wooden mallet (kine, pronounced “key-nay”), the rice is repeatedly pounded until it becomes a smooth, malleable mass.

Lots of strength and hard work needed to smoothen out the mochigome.
Children taking turns to have a chance in the mochi making session.
Once ready, the rice is laid out on a table covered with mochiko (rice flour) and shaped into different forms and flavours.

Here we have Kinako Mochi, Norimaki Mochi, and Red Bean Mochi.

Never too late for a Lo Hei! Heng Ong Huat Ah!
